WAICC funds Open Arms to support housing outreach

The Wolfville Area Inter-Church Council (WAICC) has donated $45,360 to support the on-going work of the Open Arms Resource Centre’s mobile outreach team for one year.

The donation has been made through the WAICC council’s new housing committee to support outreach within the WAICC boundaries in eastern Kings, which include Greenwich, Port Williams, Avonport, Gaspereau and the South Mountain.

Open Arms executive director Leanne Jennings and housing and outreach manager Nick Haddock were pleased to accept the donation, which will support a worker one day a week to the WAICC district.

Haddock said that the team has already connected with two unhoused individuals in the Wolfville area.

Open Arms is based in Kentville and provides not only outreach, but a 20-bed emergency shelter for the unhoused. The agency also operates the Tiny Meadows Pallet Village, affordable housing and a thrift store.

WAICC was founded in 1970 by the six local churches as an ecumenical forum. It launched the Inter-church Housing Society which created decent affordable housing for poverty-stricken families and whose success made it the subject of two National Film Board documentaries.
